Micro digger specifications

The defining figure is the ~70 cm width — narrow enough to thread through almost any standard gateway. Despite the size, it still digs to 1.7 m and reaches ~3.0 m. As a result, you keep full garden access without dismantling fences or gateposts.

Ground conditions matter most with a machine this light. On firm, dry lawns and block paving it leaves barely a mark, because the rubber tracks spread its weight well. However, very soft or waterlogged ground will still rut, so plan to work when the surface is firm for the cleanest finish.

Best for

  • Tight access gardens
  • Through standard gateways
  • Indoor & restricted sites
  • Small trenches & footings

Typical jobs include digging out footings for a garden room, trenching for a new drain or water line down a narrow side return, clearing and levelling a back-garden patio base, and excavating a small pond — all in places a bigger machine would never reach. Inside buildings it's also a popular choice for breaking out old floors during renovations.

Guide price £75/day. Your exact quote is confirmed on enquiry with no deposit to pay, and delivery and collection across the UK are arranged on your chosen dates.

Not sure the micro is right?

If your access is wider than a gate, you'll usually dig faster with a slightly bigger machine. Compare the range or jump to a neighbouring size.

In contrast, the 1.5 tonne mini digs deeper to roughly 2.3m and clears spoil faster, yet its expandable tracks still squeeze through tighter routes than you might expect. Every micro hire includes a standard digging bucket, delivery and collection, and a quick handover on the controls. Additionally, we can fit a narrower bucket for trenching or add a breaker for hard ground.

Micro digger hire FAQs

How wide is a micro digger — will it fit through my gate?
At around ~70 cm (fits standard gates), a micro digger is built to pass through a standard single garden gate, side passage or doorway. Measure your narrowest point first — if it's 70cm or more, the micro almost always fits. Send us the measurement on the form and we'll confirm before delivery.
How deep can a 0.8 tonne micro digger dig?
It'll reach up to ~1.7 m with a maximum reach of around ~3.0 m — plenty for garden trenches, footings, pond digs and most domestic drainage runs. If you need to go deeper than that, the 1.5 tonne mini takes you to roughly 2.3m.
What jobs is a micro digger best for?
It's the specialist for restricted access: back gardens reached through a gate, courtyards, internal demolition and groundwork inside buildings, and small footings or trenches where a bigger machine simply can't get in. If access is open, you'll usually get more done with a 1.5t.
Will a micro digger damage my lawn?
On rubber tracks and at just 0.8 tonne, the micro is the gentlest machine we hire — it spreads its weight well and is the safest choice for finished lawns, block paving and tidy gardens. Keep work to firm, dry ground for the cleanest finish.
Do I need a licence to operate one?
No licence is needed to use a micro digger on your own private land such as a garden. On commercial sites a CPCS/NPORS card is usually required. Prefer not to drive it? We offer operated hire with a driver.
