The numbers

3 ton digger specifications

At ~1.55 m wide it needs proper access, but in return you get a 2.9 m dig depth, ~4.7 m reach and the breakout force to dig foundations and shift spoil far faster than a mini. As a result, it has become the popular pick for domestic extensions.

Access is the main thing to plan for, because at this width it won't pass a standard garden gate and wants a driveway or double gate. Ground should be reasonably firm too, since 3 tonne can mark soft lawns even on rubber tracks. For tidy gardens, track mats or a lighter machine keep the finish clean.

Best for

  • Extensions & foundations
  • Larger landscaping
  • Trenching & drainage
  • Bulk muck-away

A go-to for groundworkers and builders: digging out and levelling for a single or double-storey extension, deeper trench footings and drainage to invert, larger garden re-grading and retaining structures, and loading bulk muck-away into a grab or tipper. It's the natural step up when a 1.5t is working too hard.

Guide price £110/day. Your exact quote is confirmed on enquiry with no deposit to pay, and delivery and collection across the UK are arranged on your chosen dates.

Too big or not big enough?

Tighter access points towards the 1.5t mini; deeper commercial digs call for the 5 tonne. Compare the full range or jump to a neighbouring size.

In contrast, the 5 tonne digs deeper to around 3.8m for commercial drainage and foundations, although it needs open site access. Every 3 tonne hire includes a standard digging bucket, delivery and collection, and a handover on safe operation. Furthermore, we can fit a grading or trenching bucket, add a breaker, or supply a ticketed operator for the job.

3 ton mini digger FAQs

How much access does a 3 ton digger need?
It's wider than a mini at around ~1.55 m, so it won't pass through a standard garden gate — you'll need a driveway, double gate or open side access. If your route is tighter than that, the 1.5 tonne mini with its expandable tracks is the better fit. Send us your access width and we'll advise.
How deep can a 3 tonne digger dig?
It reaches up to ~2.9 m with a digging reach of around ~4.7 m — deep enough for extension foundations, deeper drainage runs and larger landscaping cuts that a 1.5t can't manage. If you need more again, the 5 tonne takes you to roughly 3.8m.
Is a 3 ton digger right for an extension?
Yes — it's the popular choice for domestic extensions and foundations. The extra weight gives it the breakout force and the reach to dig deeper footings and move spoil faster than a mini, while still being compact enough for most homes with reasonable access. For bulk muck-away it also pairs well with a grab lorry.
What jobs is it best for?
Best for extensions & foundations, larger landscaping, trenching & drainage, bulk muck-away. In practice: digging out and levelling for an extension slab, deeper drainage and soakaway trenches, larger garden re-shaping and retaining-wall footings, and shifting bulk spoil where a smaller machine would be slow.
Will a 3 tonne machine damage my lawn?
At 3 tonne it's heavier than a mini, so on soft or finished lawns it can leave tracks and compaction even on rubber tracks. For tidy gardens consider laying track mats, working when the ground is firm, or dropping to a 1.5t. On a working site or driveway it's no issue.
