Our largest hire option for serious commercial excavation and deep digs. In particular, it handles deep foundations and bulk muck-shifting on bigger sites. Hired with no deposit and delivered and collected to your site anywhere in the UK.

The numbers

8 ton digger specifications

The biggest in our fleet at ~2.3 m wide, it digs to 4.5 m with ~7.0 m of reach — built for major excavation, deep foundations and bulk earthmoving where nothing smaller will keep up. As a result, it is strictly a commercial machine.

Access and ground are critical, because this excavator needs open site routes, firm hardstanding to track on, and clear room to slew. It is not suited to domestic gardens or restricted access of any kind. Therefore, plan a stable working area and a delivery route that takes a low-loader before the machine arrives.

Best for

  • Larger commercial sites
  • Deep foundations
  • Bulk excavation
  • Demolition support

The choice for serious civils and construction: excavating deep foundations, basements and attenuation tanks, bulk dig and cut-and-fill across larger plots, loading tippers and grabs at pace, and supporting demolition with the reach to work back safely. When the programme demands volume and depth, this is the machine that delivers it.

Guide price £180/day. Your exact quote is confirmed on enquiry with no deposit to pay, and delivery and collection across the UK are arranged on your chosen dates.

Is 8 tonne more than you need?

Most commercial digs are well covered by a 5 tonne, and domestic work by a 3 tonne. Compare the full range or jump to a neighbouring size.

In contrast, the 5 tonne covers the majority of commercial groundwork and fits tighter sites, whereas the 8 tonne earns its place only on deeper, higher-volume work. Every hire includes a digging bucket, delivery and collection on a low-loader, and a handover on safe use. Furthermore, we strongly recommend a ticketed operator at this size and can arrange one with the machine.

8 ton digger hire FAQs

What access and ground does an 8 ton digger need?
At around ~2.3 m wide and 8 tonne, this is our largest machine and a full commercial excavator. It needs open site access, firm hardstanding to track and work on, and clear room to slew — it's not suited to domestic gardens or restricted access. For tighter or lighter work see the 5 tonne.
How deep can an 8 tonne digger dig?
It reaches up to ~4.5 m with a digging reach of around ~7.0 m — the deepest and longest of our range, for deep foundations, attenuation tanks and major drainage. If that's more than you need, the 5 tonne covers most commercial digs.
What jobs is an 8 ton digger best for?
Best for larger commercial sites, deep foundations, bulk excavation, demolition support. That means larger commercial and infrastructure sites, deep and high-volume foundation excavation, bulk earthmoving and cut-and-fill, and supporting demolition work where you need real reach and power.
Can you supply an operator?
Yes — at this size an experienced, ticketed operator is strongly recommended and usually required on site. We can arrange operated hire with a driver so the excavation is carried out for you, safely and efficiently.
Why choose 8 tonne over a smaller machine?
It's about depth, reach and volume. When a 5 tonne is working flat out — deep digs, bulk muck-away, demolition support — the 8 tonne gets the same work done faster with the reach to load tippers cleanly and dig below the range of the rest of our fleet. For anything domestic, though, it's far more machine than you need.
