The right digger for any garden job

A mini digger turns days of back-breaking spade work into an afternoon. Whether you're reshaping the whole garden, sinking a pond, prepping a patio base, building raised beds or clearing years of overgrowth, the right machine does it faster, deeper and more neatly than digging by hand. Moreover, it gets to your gate the day you need it.

For domestic gardens we mostly hire two sizes. The 0.8 tonne micro digger is around 70 cm wide; consequently it slips through most standard gates and side passages for tight-access plots. The 1.5 tonne mini digger has expandable tracks — narrow to get in, wide for stability — and is the popular all-rounder for landscaping and drainage. There's no deposit, pricing is agreed upfront, and if you'd rather not dig yourself we can supply an experienced operator.

What you can tackle

Garden jobs a mini digger makes easy

Landscaping & levelling

Strip turf, level uneven ground and shape beds and borders in a fraction of the time digging by hand would take. As a result, a project that once filled a weekend is often finished in a single afternoon.

Ponds & water features

Excavate ponds, soakaways and water features cleanly, with the spoil loaded straight into a barrow or dumper. The smooth bucket leaves tidy edges that are ready to line and fill.

Patios & raised beds

Dig out and prepare sub-bases for patios, paths and raised beds, ready for hardcore and slabs. Consistent depth across the area means less hand-trimming before you lay.

Drainage & footings

Cut trenches for garden drainage, soakaways and shed or summerhouse footings to a consistent depth. For example, a narrow trenching bucket keeps spoil low and the run straight.

Garden clearance

Clear out an overgrown or tired garden fast — grub out roots, old bases and rubble ready for a fresh start. Spoil and waste load straight into a dumper or skip as you go.

Operated option

Don't fancy doing the digging yourself? Hire the machine with an experienced driver and we'll do it for you.

Garden digger hire — FAQs

How much does it cost to hire a garden mini digger?
Garden digger hire typically starts from around £70–£90 per day for a 0.8–1.5 tonne machine, with weekend and weekly rates cheaper per day. The exact price depends on size, location and hire length. See our price guide or send the form for an exact, no-deposit quote.
Will a mini digger fit through my garden gate?
Usually, yes. Our 0.8 tonne micro digger is around 70 cm wide and fits through most standard gates and side passages. The 1.5 tonne machine has expandable tracks that narrow to squeeze through tight access then widen for stability. Measure your narrowest point and we'll confirm.
Will a digger damage my lawn or driveway?
Mini diggers run on rubber tracks that spread their weight and are much gentler than wheels. On soft lawns we'd recommend boards or sheets to protect the surface across the access route, and we're happy to advise on the best approach for your garden.
Do I need a licence to use a digger in my own garden?
No — you don't need a licence to operate a mini digger on private land such as your own garden. If you'd rather not dig yourself, you can hire a garden digger with a driver.
What size garden digger do I need?
For most domestic gardens a 0.8 tonne micro or 1.5 tonne mini digger does the job. Choose the micro for tight gateways and lighter work; step up to the 1.5 tonne for landscaping, ponds and drainage where you want more reach and dig depth. Compare the sizes if you're unsure.
