The numbers

1.5 tonne digger specifications

The magic is in the expandable tracks: narrow to ~98 cm for access, then wide for stability. Combined with a 2.3 m dig depth and ~3.8 m reach, it handles the bulk of domestic jobs in one hire. As a result, most homeowners and landscapers reach for this size first.

On rubber tracks at 1.5 tonne it stays kind to lawns and block paving, because its weight spreads evenly across the ground. However, soft or wet surfaces can still mark, so firm conditions give the tidiest finish. For really tight gates the lighter 0.8t micro is gentler still.

Best for

  • Garden landscaping
  • Drainage & footings
  • Pond & foundation digs
  • Driveways

A typical week with the 1.5t might cover digging and levelling for a new patio or lawn, excavating footings for a garden wall or extension corner, trenching a drainage run to a soakaway, and breaking ground for a driveway base. Its blend of reach, depth and access is why it's the machine most homeowners and landscapers reach for first.

Guide price £85/day. Your exact quote is confirmed on enquiry with no deposit to pay, and delivery and collection across the UK are arranged on your chosen dates.

Bigger or smaller job?

For really tight access drop to the micro; for extensions and deeper footings step up to the 3 tonne. Compare the full range or jump to a neighbouring size.

In contrast, the 3 tonne midi digs deeper to around 2.9m with more breakout force, although it needs a driveway or double gate rather than a standard gateway. Every 1.5 tonne hire includes a standard digging bucket, delivery and collection, and a handover on safe use. Additionally, we can add a grading bucket or breaker, or supply an operator if you would rather not drive it.

1.5 tonne mini digger FAQs

How wide is a 1.5 tonne digger — will it fit through my access?
Its standout feature is expandable tracks. Retracted it's around ~98 cm to squeeze through a tight side passage, then it widens out on site for far better stability when digging. Measure your narrowest point — if it's roughly 1m or more you're good. Send the figure on the form and we'll confirm.
How deep can a 1.5 tonne mini digger dig?
It digs up to ~2.3 m with a reach of around ~3.8 m — enough for footings, drainage runs, pond and foundation digs and most domestic landscaping. Need to go deeper for an extension? Step up to the 3 tonne, which reaches roughly 2.9m.
Why is the 1.5 tonne the most popular size?
It's the all-rounder. The expandable tracks give it the access of a small machine with the stability and dig depth of a bigger one, so it covers the majority of domestic and light-trade jobs — landscaping, driveways, drainage and footings — without being overkill. For most gardens with a normal access route, this is the one we recommend.
What jobs is it best for?
Ideal for garden landscaping, drainage & footings, pond & foundation digs, driveways. In practice that means re-shaping a garden, digging footings for an outbuilding or wall, excavating a pond, running new drainage, and breaking ground for a driveway base — all in one hire.
Will it damage my lawn or driveway?
On rubber tracks at 1.5 tonne it's still gentle on most surfaces, spreading its weight well across lawns and block paving. On soft or wet ground it can leave marks, so for a finished garden we'd suggest working when the ground is firm — or dropping to the lighter 0.8t micro.
